Data and privacy

Your assessments, students, and markings are stored in your browser — on the device where you created them. By default, nothing about your students leaves your device.

Everything you create in the app:

  • Assessments and their setups
  • Students
  • Markings, including indicators, notes, and written comments

This data persists between sessions and is available offline.

Two things can send data externally, and only when you explicitly trigger them:

  • AI-drafted comments — when you click Generate, the app sends your marking data to an AI provider (Anthropic) to draft feedback. This includes the overall mark, indicator values, context field values, notes, derived criteria scores, and assessment instructions. Student names and IDs are not sent.
  • File exports — when you export, files save to your Downloads folder. Where they go from there is up to you.

If you clear your browser’s storage for the site, all your data disappears. This is the main risk of browser-based storage.

To protect your work:

  • Export backups regularly using the export button on the assessment screen
  • Export setups as JSON before a term ends, so you can reuse them

The app works fully offline except for AI features. You can create assessments, mark students, and export results without an internet connection. AI-drafted comments require a connection when you request them.

AI is optional. You can write comments yourself instead of generating them. The rest of the app — marking, scoring, exports — works the same either way.
