Generating feedback

After marking a student, you switch to Feedback view to create their feedback. Feedback has two parts:

  • Scores — calculated automatically from your overall mark and indicator values
  • Written comments — text that AI drafts for you, which you then edit and approve

This page covers the Feedback view and written comments.

On the marking screen, use the toggle in the header to switch from Capture to Feedback.

Click Generate to have AI draft written comments for this student. The app sends your marking data to the AI, which returns a draft based on how the student performed.

What AI sees:

  • The overall mark
  • Indicator values you set
  • Context field values (e.g., the student’s topic)
  • Your freeform notes
  • Assessment instructions and comment settings

What AI doesn’t see:

  • Student names or IDs

The AI draft appears in an editable text area. Review it and make changes:

  • Fix any inaccuracies
  • Adjust tone or emphasis
  • Add specific points you want to make
  • Remove anything that doesn’t fit

The draft is a starting point. You decide what the student actually reads.

If you want AI to revise the draft, click Refine and tell it what to change:

  • “Make it shorter”
  • “Add something about their evidence use”
  • “Make the tone more encouraging”
  • “Focus more on what they did well”

AI will update the draft based on your instructions.

Click Save feedback (or Update feedback if you’ve already saved once). The marking status changes to Complete, meaning this student’s feedback (scores and written comments) is ready.

If you change the overall mark or indicator values after saving, the app warns you that the written comments may no longer match the scores. You can:

  • Regenerate to get a fresh draft based on the updated marks
  • Keep the existing written comments if they’re still accurate
  • Edit the written comments manually

AI is optional. You can:

  • Write comments from scratch in the editor
  • Generate a draft and rewrite it completely
  • Skip written comments altogether

The scores and the rest of the app work the same either way.

How AI drafts written comments is configured in Edit setup on the AI comments tab:

  • Tone — warm, professional, direct, etc.
  • Length — paragraph count or word count
  • Structure — strengths first, chronological, interwoven
  • Grade bands — suggested language for different mark ranges
  • Custom instructions — house style, phrases to use or avoid

See Written comments for more detail.

  • Generate after marking, not during. Capture view is for the live assessment; Feedback view is for afterwards.
  • Notes make better drafts. The more you write in notes, the more specific AI can be.
  • Edit ruthlessly. AI gives you speed — you provide quality control.
  • Refine is faster than rewriting. If the draft is 80% right, use Refine to fix the rest.
