Creating an assessment
An assessment in IOA Marker represents a single piece of assessment work — one IOA session, one exam, one assignment. Each assessment has its own criteria, indicators, prompts, and students.
Create a new assessment
Section titled “Create a new assessment”- From the assessments list (the home screen), click New assessment
- Enter a name — this is for your reference, students don’t see it
- Optionally add a course label (e.g., “PUBH2001”) and date (e.g., “May 2026”)
- Click Save
You’re taken to the assessment screen, which shows the student list (empty at first) and an Edit setup button.
Assessment settings
Section titled “Assessment settings”Open Setup to configure the assessment. The key choices are on the Marking tab:
Student view
Section titled “Student view”What students see when they receive their results. See What students see for the full explanation.
| View | Students see |
|---|---|
| Full breakdown | Criteria scores, indicators, overall mark, comments |
| Indicators only | Indicators, overall mark, comments |
| Criteria table only | Criteria scores, overall mark, comments |
| Overall mark only | Overall mark and comments |
Choose based on what level of detail you want to share. Most formal IOAs use Full breakdown.
Marking mode
Section titled “Marking mode”How you enter scores during marking:
- Indicators mode (default): You give an overall mark and record indicator values. The app derives per-criterion scores.
- Criteria mode: You enter per-criterion scores directly. The app sums them.
For live oral assessments, indicators mode is almost always better — you form a gestalt impression, not criterion-by-criterion scores.
Criteria score type
Section titled “Criteria score type”How criterion scores are displayed:
- Percent: Max points must sum to 100. Displayed with %.
- Points: Max points can sum to anything. Displayed as raw numbers.
This is purely a display choice.
Renaming an assessment
Section titled “Renaming an assessment”On the assessment screen, click the assessment name in the header to edit it.
Duplicating an assessment
Section titled “Duplicating an assessment”From the assessments list, click the duplicate icon on an assessment card. This opens a dialog where you can:
- Change the name (defaults to “Original name (copy)”)
- Update the course and date
The duplicate copies all setup (criteria, indicators, prompts, settings) but not students or markings — perfect for running the same assessment with a new cohort.
Deleting an assessment
Section titled “Deleting an assessment”On the assessments list, click the trash icon on an assessment card. You’ll be asked to confirm. This cannot be undone — all students and markings are permanently removed.
