Getting started
This guide walks you through creating an assessment, adding a student, and marking them. You’ll have a working setup in under five minutes.
The four screens
Section titled “The four screens”IOA Marker has four main screens:
- Assessments — your list of assessments (the home screen)
- Assessment — a single assessment’s students and their marking status
- Setup — where you configure criteria, indicators, prompts, and settings
- Marking — where you capture marks and generate feedback for a student
You’ll move through them in that order when setting up a new assessment.
Create an assessment
Section titled “Create an assessment”- Open the app
- Click New assessment
- Enter a name (you can change it later)
- Click Create
You’re now on the assessment screen. It’s empty because you haven’t added students yet.
Open setup
Section titled “Open setup”Click Edit setup in the header to configure your assessment. The setup page has several tabs:
- About — name, course, and date
- Instructions — what students were asked to do
- Prompts — questions you plan to ask
- Context fields — extra info you capture per student (e.g., topic)
- Marking — criteria, indicators, and scoring settings
- AI comments — tone, length, and structure for generated feedback
For a quick start, you need criteria and indicators (both on the Marking tab) and at least one student.
Add a criterion
Section titled “Add a criterion”- Go to the Marking tab
- In the Criteria section, click Add and select Add criterion
- Enter a name (e.g., “Understanding”) and max points (e.g., 50)
- Add another criterion (e.g., “Communication”, 50 points)
Your criteria now total 100 points.
Add an indicator
Section titled “Add an indicator”- Stay on the Marking tab
- In the Indicators section, click Add and select Add indicator
- Enter a name (e.g., “Explains concepts clearly”)
- In the influence matrix below, click the cell where your indicator intersects with a criterion to set how strongly it affects that criterion’s score
Indicators are what you actually observe during the assessment. They influence how points are distributed across criteria.
Add a student
Section titled “Add a student”- Click the back arrow to return to the assessment screen
- Click Add students and select Add single student
- Enter a name and optionally a student ID and email
Mark the student
Section titled “Mark the student”Click the student’s row to open the marking screen.
The marking screen has two views (toggle in the header):
Capture — record observations during the assessment:
- Set the overall mark (0–100) — your holistic judgement
- Set indicator values using the 5-point buttons
- Check off prompts as you cover them
- Add notes for anything else
Feedback — create written feedback after marking:
- Click Generate to draft AI comments from your marks and notes
- Edit the draft as needed
- Click Save feedback to finalize
